The seers who mapped the sky.
A Jyotishi is a practitioner of Jyotish, the Vedic science of light. The word comes from jyoti, light, and the Jyotishi is the one who brings that light to bear on a human life.
The sages the tradition credits, Parashara, Bhrigu, Varahamihira, were not astrologers in the casual sense. They were scholars, mathematicians and philosophers who spent lifetimes watching how the moving sky meets life on the ground.
What they built was not a belief system. It was a record: observation, codification, testing, refinement, repeated across generations, each adding precision to what came before.

The Vedic age
A discipline of time
Jyotish is one of the six Vedangas, the disciplines that supported study of the Vedas. Its first job was timekeeping: where the Sun and Moon stood, and when to act.
c. 1400 to 400 BCE
The oldest text
The Vedanga Jyotisha sets out a calendar of the Sun and Moon. Scholars date it anywhere in this range; tradition places the knowledge earlier.

Parashara
The sage Parashara is credited with the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, the foundation of chart reading and the source of the 120-year cycle of planetary seasons still used today.

In Ujjain, Varahamihira writes the Brihat Jataka, one of the classic manuals for reading a birth chart.
Through the centuries
Teacher to student
The knowledge passes hand to hand, a chain called parampara: through the rise and fall of empires, through invasion and colonization, through a modern age that dismissed what its instruments could not measure. The Jyotishis kept teaching. The charts kept being drawn.
Late 20th century
The Systems’ Approach
After years of empirical study of birth charts, Prof. V.K. Choudhry and his son K. Rajesh Chaudhary codify the tradition into a fixed ruleset. Not something new: something ancient, refined, so that the reading no longer depends on the reader.

The Vedic tradition is vast. Nadi, Prashna, Muhurta: each branch carries wisdom gathered over millennia and deserves the respect that history demands. Star & Root works within one, the Systems’ Approach.
It offers something rare in any tradition: a reading that does not change with the reader. Each planet’s role is fixed for each rising sign. Two readers trained in it, working from the same chart, reach the same conclusion, or one of them has made an error. That is not a limitation. That is the point.
Where subjectivity has long been both the tradition’s greatest weakness and its most convenient defense, the Systems’ Approach chose rigor. Star & Root made the same choice.

Meet Surya
Surya is our named guide, the voice through which the tradition speaks at Star & Root.
The name is not incidental. In the Vedic tradition Surya is the Sun: the planet of soul, authority and illumination, the force that makes sight possible. Without light there is no chart. Without the Sun no shadow falls, no position is marked, no season turns.
Surya reads every chart through the Systems’ Approach: the role of each planet, judged against your rising sign; the strength of each placement, measured by the codified rules; your seasons, calculated to the day; the transits, mapped against the actual sky.
Not intuition. Not vague impression. The light, applied with exactness.

Every reading goes through the same codified rules, applied the same way to every chart. We do not blend traditions. We do not layer intuition over the calculation. We do not soften difficult readings or inflate favorable ones, and every hard stretch comes with what helps.
The Jyotishis who came before us spent lifetimes earning the right to say the map is accurate. We carry that standard forward. Every reading, every chart, every time.
