Why some planets carry you and others ask more of you
The same planet can work for one chart and against another. In the Systems' Approach, your rising sign decides which.
In the Systems’ Approach, whether a planet carries you or asks more of you is decided by where its key sign falls, counted from your rising sign. If that sign lands in the sixth, eighth or twelfth house, the planet asks more of you; anywhere else, it works in your favor. Rahu and Ketu, the two lunar points, ask more of every chart.
What is a planet’s key sign?
Most planets rule two signs of the zodiac, and one of the two is the planet’s mooltrikona sign, the position where it is most completely itself. The Systems’ Approach uses that particular sign to establish the planet’s role in your chart.
- Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, and its key sign is Aries.
- Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, and its key sign is Virgo.
- Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces, and its key sign is Sagittarius.
- Venus rules Taurus and Libra, and its key sign is Libra.
- Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius, and its key sign is Aquarius.
The Sun and the Moon rule a single sign each, Leo and Cancer, and their roles are read for each rising sign as well. Rahu and Ketu are a special case: they press on every chart, whatever the rising sign.
Why the sixth, eighth and twelfth houses?
Your chart is divided into twelve houses, twelve areas of life counted from your rising sign. Three of them govern the difficult terrain of a life: the sixth holds conflict, debt and illness, the eighth sudden upheaval and obstacles, and the twelfth loss and expense.
A planet whose key sign falls in one of those three houses is tied to that terrain for your whole life. Its periods and its movements tend to bring those subjects forward, so it asks more of you. The twelve houses describes all twelve areas in more detail.
Which rising signs does each planet ask more of?
Counting each key sign from the twelve rising signs gives a fixed result. Each of these five planets asks more of three rising signs and works in favor of the other nine.
- Mars asks more of Taurus rising (its key sign falls in the twelfth house), Virgo rising (the eighth) and Scorpio rising (the sixth).
- Mercury asks more of Aries rising (the sixth), Libra rising (the twelfth) and Aquarius rising (the eighth).
- Jupiter asks more of Taurus rising (the eighth), Cancer rising (the sixth) and Capricorn rising (the twelfth).
- Venus asks more of Taurus rising (the sixth), Scorpio rising (the twelfth) and Pisces rising (the eighth).
- Saturn asks more of Cancer rising (the eighth), Virgo rising (the sixth) and Pisces rising (the twelfth).
- Rahu and Ketu ask more of all twelve rising signs, without exception.
These roles do not change with the reader, the season or the year. They are calculated, not felt, which is why two practitioners working from the same chart reach the same conclusion.
One planet, two charts
Consider Saturn in two different charts. For someone with Aries rising, Saturn’s key sign, Aquarius, falls in the eleventh house, the area of income, gains and friendships, so Saturn carries an Aries-rising chart. Its characteristic gift is patient, disciplined effort that builds durable results.
For Virgo rising, Aquarius falls in the sixth house, the area of disputes, debts and illness, so Saturn asks more of a Virgo-rising chart. The same planet, under the same sky, plays opposite roles. For Virgo rising, Mars, the Sun, Rahu and Ketu also ask more; for Aries rising, only Mercury, Rahu and Ketu do.
Does a planet that asks more always cause trouble?
No, because the planet’s strength determines how much it actually asks of you. A strong planet that works against you causes real disruption, while a weak one causes less harm. A planet that carries you delivers fully only when it is strong; a weak one cannot protect much.
Placement matters as well. A planet that asks more of you, positioned in one of the three difficult houses at birth, is partly contained there. That containment limits its reach into the principal areas of your life.
What the roles mean in practice
The roles shape every layer of a reading. A season ruled by a planet that carries you tends to be supportive. A season ruled by one that asks more calls for careful navigation in the areas it governs. The seasons of a life explains how those seasons are timed.
Remedies follow the same logic: practices that ease the planets creating friction, and strengthen the ones working in your favor. A gemstone is reserved exclusively for a planet that carries you. A stone for a planet that works against you would strengthen the wrong influence, which is the subject of why the wrong gemstone can work against you.
Practitioner note
A planet is a functional malefic when its mooltrikona sign falls in H6, H8 or H12 from the lagna, and a functional benefic otherwise. Rahu and Ketu are functional malefics for every lagna. Strength is assessed before interpretation, no neechabhanga is applied, and a functional malefic placed in a dusthana is relatively contained.
The Most Malefic Planet is the lord of the mooltrikona sign in H8, else in H12, else Ketu. For Aries lagna it is Ketu by default; for Virgo lagna it is Mars, with Aries in H8. Gemstones are prescribed only for functional benefics, never for functional malefics.
Your own roles
The roles described above are fixed by rising sign. Your individual chart adds how strong each planet was at your birth, and how the moving sky interacts with it now.
Your personalized chart reads the moving sky against your own planets every month or week, including the planets that carry you and the ones that ask more of you.
