December 10 and 12: Saturn turns forward, Jupiter turns back

Two slow planets change direction two days apart. Here is what each one is doing, and what those three days mean for your rising sign.

On Thursday, December 10, 2026, at 7:30 PM Eastern Time, Saturn ends 137 days of backward motion in Pisces and turns forward. Two days later, on Saturday, December 12, at 7:31 PM Eastern, Jupiter turns backward near the very start of Leo. Two of the slowest-moving planets of Jyotish change direction within three days.

What does it mean when a planet turns forward or backward?

From Earth, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn each spend part of their cycle appearing to move backward through the zodiac. The planet is not reversing; our own planet is overtaking it, or being overtaken. The moment it seems to stand still before changing direction is called a station.

The tradition holds that a planet near its station exerts heightened influence on everything it governs.

Why do December 10 and 12 matter?

Saturn and Jupiter take years to circle the zodiac, so they linger at their stations for days, not hours. In the Systems’ Approach, a slow planet that works against your chart is at its most pronounced when it is stationary. A slow planet that works for your chart, stationary, extends its support.

Which of the two applies depends on your rising sign: Saturn works against three rising signs, Cancer, Virgo and Pisces, and supports the other nine. Jupiter works against Taurus, Cancer and Capricorn, and supports the other nine. For Cancer rising, both pause against the chart within the same three days.

Saturn: forward again after 137 days

Saturn governs discipline, sustained effort, delay, longevity, land, labor and the masses. Its gift, where it supports a chart, is that patient work produces results that last.

Saturn has been moving backward through Pisces since July 26. When a planet that supports you moves backward, its help still arrives, but less directly, and the guidance is to review rather than launch. From December 10, Saturn moves forward again, and it stays in Pisces until June 2, 2027, when it moves on into Aries, its sign of greatest weakness.

Jupiter: backward from December 12

Jupiter governs wisdom, law, education, children, counsel and the growth of wealth. It turns backward only a step inside Leo, in the first five degrees of the sign, a stretch the tradition calls a planet’s infancy, when it cannot fully deliver what it governs.

So for the coming months, treat Jupiter’s matters as a time to revisit, review and refine. Where Jupiter works against your chart, its pressure turns more inward and harder to trace, so the advice is patience rather than force. Jupiter’s full timeline for the year ahead, including its return to Cancer, is in Jupiter leaves Cancer on October 31.

The dates

  • July 26, 2:58 PM — Saturn turns backward in Pisces
  • December 10, 7:30 PM — Saturn turns forward in Pisces
  • December 12, 7:31 PM — Jupiter turns backward in Leo
  • June 2, 2027, 7:58 PM — Saturn enters Aries

All times Eastern, 2026 unless marked, sidereal zodiac (Lahiri). Readers farther east may see a date move by one day.

What it means for your rising sign

Your rising sign decides which part of your life Pisces and Leo govern, and whether each planet works for your chart or against it.

  • Aries rising: Saturn works for you but sits in the area of rest and spending, where its help is reduced, so keep costs steady. Jupiter turns backward over creativity and study: revisit a course or project before you start a new one.
  • Taurus rising: Saturn, which works for you, turns forward over income and friendships, so slow, steady gains have room to build. Jupiter works against your sign and turns backward over home, so hold major property decisions.
  • Gemini rising: Saturn turns forward over career, which favors steady work that compounds. Jupiter slows over your own projects and messages, so refine what you have written before you send it.
  • Cancer rising: Both planets work against your sign and both pause within the same three days. Plan long journeys with care, speak carefully about money at home, and defer large financial commitments.
  • Leo rising: Saturn, which works for you, turns forward in the area of sudden change, obstructions and inheritance, a time for patient consolidation. Jupiter turns backward on your own sign, so review personal plans before you push them.
  • Virgo rising: Saturn works against your sign and turns forward over partnership, so give partners patience and generous space around December 10. Jupiter slows in the area of rest and spending; protect your downtime.
  • Libra rising: Saturn turns forward over health routines and obligations, where its support is reduced, so keep habits simple and debts small. Jupiter slows over income and friends, so revisit an old contact before you chase a new one.
  • Scorpio rising: Saturn turns forward over creative work, study and investment, and favors the patient version of each. Jupiter turns backward over career, so refine standing projects rather than pitch a new one.
  • Sagittarius rising: Saturn turns forward over home and property, supporting steady improvements there. Jupiter, the planet of your own sign, slows over beliefs and long journeys, so revisit a plan to study or travel before you book it.
  • Capricorn rising: Saturn, the planet of your own sign, turns forward over your own efforts and messages, so steady independent work can move. Jupiter works against your sign but turns backward in the area of sudden change, where its pressure is contained.
  • Aquarius rising: Saturn, the planet of your own sign, turns forward over money and family, which supports patient saving. Jupiter slows over partnership, so revisit an agreement before you sign a new one.
  • Pisces rising: Saturn works against your sign and pauses on it around December 10, so guard your health and pace, and avoid impulsive moves. Jupiter, the planet of your own sign, slows in the area of health routines and obligations, where its help is reduced.
Practitioner note

Saturn stations direct at 13°41′ Pisces (00:30 UTC, December 11), after turning retrograde at 20°31′ Pisces on July 26. Jupiter stations retrograde at 2°47′ Leo (00:31 UTC, December 13), in infancy.

Saturn’s mooltrikona, Aquarius, falls in H8 for Cancer lagna, H6 for Virgo and H12 for Pisces, so Saturn is a functional malefic for those three. Jupiter’s mooltrikona, Sagittarius, falls in H8 for Taurus, H6 for Cancer and H12 for Capricorn. A functional benefic transiting H6, H8 or H12 is weakened: Saturn for Aries (H12) and Libra (H6), Jupiter for Virgo (H12) and Pisces (H6). For Leo lagna, Saturn transits H8 as a functional benefic: patient consolidation, not expansion.

The forecast is not the weather

A forecast does not make the rain; it tells you when to carry an umbrella. Foreknowledge is not fate: it is the difference between a navigator and a passenger.

The lines above count the twelve areas of life from your rising sign alone. Whether Saturn or Jupiter passes close to a planet you were born with changes how strongly you feel these two turns. The Life Chart maps that for your own chart.

The monthly sky follows moves like this one, month by month, for your rising sign.
